Climbing the Coast

We made it to the redwoods by Monday afternoon. The coastal growing trees are housed within several national and state parks on the northern coast of California. Even after seeing Sequoia N.P., the redwoods are still a must see! Sequoia trees grow wider and the redwoods grow taller. Of course, there are always exceptions to the rules and there are redwoods as wide as some sequoias, and some sequoias as tall as redwoods. The redwoods have a totally different feel to them than the sequoias; as you drive through the curvy road you are surrounded by giant trees creating a lush canopy above, as if driving through a tunnel. Being near the coast, a misty fog always lurks above with rays of sunshine piercing through in spots. The vegetation is much more dense and gives a rainforest feel with ferns and moss covering everything.

We found one particularly awesome spot in the grove and pulled over. Before I could even get my camera out the twins were already climbing. I quickly set up the tripod and took a timed shot:

Leaving the redwoods we continued up US Coastal Route 101 where we finally got the cool temperatures that the van and our bodies needed. Around 11p.m. we found a spot of N.F. land to bed down in for the night.

This morning, as we continue to drive up the coast, the temp remains around 55-60 degrees. We will continue up THE 101, waves crashing to our west, until we reach Astoria, where we will visit a particular beach…

Big Destinations

Well we managed to gather the will power to pull ourselves away from our amazing hosts, and California burittos, and left San Diego Friday afternoon. We drove the rest of the day on Friday and landed ourselves in Sequoia National Forest around 10:30 pm. There, after a long hot day of driving and steep winding roads, we went immediately to bed.

Saturday morning we set off for Sequoia National Park, but didnt manage to make it all the way due to some van trouble. So we settled into a Walmart in Portersville and spent some time in Starbucks. That evening we watched a movie from redbox and tried to sleep in the nasty humidity.

This morning (Sunday), we sucessfully drove to Sequoia N.P. and drove up some more winding mountain roads, not the vans favorite right now, and made it to the big trees! We ventured around some of 2000 year old giants and visited the giant forest musuem. It was awesome!

Now we are back on the road making our way north west towards the Northern California coastline. If all goes well we will make most of the 11 hour trip before bed. As for tomorrow: Redwood N.P.!

San Diego-ins

We made it to San Diego after 530 miles on Sunday night and we have spent 4 awesome days with Gershom and Lara! The first day we went down to MB, Mission Beach, where we "people watched", took a walk on the beach, dunked our feet in the Pacific Ocean. We ate lunch at a little hole in the wall place that sold a little bit of everything. Then that night we walked to Roberto's where we were introduced to a lovely friend of Lara and Gershom's called "the California burrito." Steak and french fries with quacamole wrapped in a homemade, (right next to mexico), tortilla..Delicious!

The next day we went down to OB, Ocean Beach, where we hung out on the beach, went swimming and then sun bathed some more. Afterwards we went to a famous burger place called Ho-dads, to give you an idea of the popularity of this place their was a line going outside of the restaurant to get in. Then we all came home just in time to catch Lara getting home from work. Then yesterday Lara managed to get a half day of work and we scheduled a kayak cave tour for the afternoon. The tour took us around La Jolla beach and its caves, we had a blast!

Saw some sea-lions and moon jelly fish. Once we finished the tour we headed home, grabbing In and Out burgers, from the secret menu. Only those who eat In and Out know what the secret menu is. We all got something animal style whether it was our burger or french fries, either way the animal style burger was pretty good. Not as good as the burritos though!

We just returned from our Hike to Blacks Beach through the famous Torrey Pines State Reserve, where we had an awesome time walking the beach trying to catch guitar fish and taking pictures of everything. Lots of cool stuff, check out the pics. We are on our tentative last night here with Lara and Gershom eating more California burritos for dinner and watching one last horror movie to bed here in San Diego!

What happens...

We are sitting in the Nellie's Suite Hotel in Las Vegas thanks to a donation from my Aunt and are planning our lunch place for today. Before we found ourselves here, we were headed South on 163 from Utah headed toward Monument Valley which was awesome! It was everything like in all the films I had seen it in. We overheated once in the desert but we took advantage of our time stranded to do more face paintings, only this time Adam helped paint Kiss member's face artwork on myself and Andrew! We eventually left and made it through the valley and were making good time toward the Northern Rim of The Grand Canyon, after a few more hours of driving we made it. We are taking Rt. 67 to the northern entrance when we get out to stop and refill the fuel tank a bit, then we look over and see a bison... none of us knew there were bison there and come to find out they are non-native outside of the North Rim of The Grand Canyon and were brought there as a cattle enterprise in the early 20th century. The original goals of the people who brought the cattle realized the idea wouldn't work and they abandoned the operation and the bison remain there to this day! Neat fun fact! It was a nice drive in and once we reached the Grand Canyon and all of it's views to behold we were in awwwee! To our luck we made it in time to see another lighting storm inside the canyon and Adam managed to grab some photos of lighting shooting into the canyon after a lot of taken photos. We appreciated the Canyon for about an hour or so then we took back off to find camp outside of the park. There was a parcel of National Forest Land right outside of the park, so we found a nice level campsite, no fires though as there is still a fire band.

We woke the next morning packed up headed for Zion National Park and once we made it, it was another one of the those places that was just breathtaking, it's a scenic drive through the park and it was just incredible how they managed to blast tunnels out of mountains to make it possible to drive two thousand feet into this canyon. Once we got down in it was about 100 degrees so we weren't going to go hiking or anything but we went to the gift shop to grab some water and when we got back to the van the propane tank was leaking. Somewhere along the way we must have hit a bump that punctured the bottom of the tank so now we are cooking on a little Coleman stove from here on out. We took off toward Las Vegas after that stopping to grab oil and at other stores and stuff. We tried finding a body of water near a river but the river was dried up, so we found a reservoir to cool ourselves off in the desert, man was it refreshing! After sweating all day and driving, it was perfect. The three of us just waded in the water for an hour while the sun went down.

Afterwards we took off for Las Vegas, it was only about 66 miles from the reservoir we were swimming at. Adam who has already been to Las Vegas was not in as much shock to its size and magnitude as Andrew and I. You can never prepare someone for any site like Vegas or The Grand Canyon or Monument Valley. They just have to see it for themselves to really understand the majesty! We parked at the Bellagio and walked around strip. We went through Bellagio, Caesars Palace, Paris, New York New York, MGM Grand and the likes. We grabbed a slice of pizza in New York and then decided there is just too much to see and do and grabbed a cheap hotel off of the strip. After walking back to the Bellagio to retrieve Casper, and spending an hour in traffic, we found the hotel. We hit the sack around 3 or so.

Now as I said, we are off to the strip to grab some lunch. Next we venture towards California!
