Climbing the Coast

We made it to the redwoods by Monday afternoon. The coastal growing trees are housed within several national and state parks on the northern coast of California. Even after seeing Sequoia N.P., the redwoods are still a must see! Sequoia trees grow wider and the redwoods grow taller. Of course, there are always exceptions to the rules and there are redwoods as wide as some sequoias, and some sequoias as tall as redwoods. The redwoods have a totally different feel to them than the sequoias; as you drive through the curvy road you are surrounded by giant trees creating a lush canopy above, as if driving through a tunnel. Being near the coast, a misty fog always lurks above with rays of sunshine piercing through in spots. The vegetation is much more dense and gives a rainforest feel with ferns and moss covering everything.

We found one particularly awesome spot in the grove and pulled over. Before I could even get my camera out the twins were already climbing. I quickly set up the tripod and took a timed shot:

Leaving the redwoods we continued up US Coastal Route 101 where we finally got the cool temperatures that the van and our bodies needed. Around 11p.m. we found a spot of N.F. land to bed down in for the night.

This morning, as we continue to drive up the coast, the temp remains around 55-60 degrees. We will continue up THE 101, waves crashing to our west, until we reach Astoria, where we will visit a particular beach…
